Class Description

Welcome to live online Introduction to Painting! Although this is an Introductory course meant to introduce beginners to the medium, all levels are welcome! Think of this as a survey class. We will be going over a range of techniques, subject matters, styles, and color palettes.

The goal of this virtual class is to not necessarily become a master painter (although it can be if you want it to be) but to learn the basics so that we can explore the many possibilities of the medium.

Class Requirements

There are no class requirements besides needing to buy the class supplies. This is an introductory class, so no prior experience nor knowledge is needed although appreciated. Otherwise, come with an open mind and a willingness to make a mess!

Class Supplies

**I will be going over supply specifics on the first day, but here is a list if you would like to get a head start on supplies.

– Paint variety; have at least a form of white, black, brown, yellow, red, and blue (I will be teaching in oil because it has more range, but you may use acrylic)
– Brushes (make sure they’re compatible with the paints you’re using!)
– Palette Knife
– Canvases
– Palette (glass pane recommended, but you may use any other palette that works)
– Blue shop rags (for paint removal)
– Apron/Clothes you can get dirty
– Razor scraper for a palette (especially if you’re using a glass palette)
– sketchbook/journal for thumbnails/notes
– surface to work on

IF YOU’RE USING OILS, you NEED these materials:
– Odorless Mineral Spirits "OMS"
– 2 glass/metal jars (safe for storing OMS)
– Cleaning solutions to clean oil paint off brushes

Recommended: Easel, potential still life objects, gesso to prime canvases, sanding sheets to smooth canvas, Medium for glazing (TBA – we will decide if we want to learn how to use this)

FAQ

Is this an active participation course? (Doing the art along side you?)

It could be if you want it to. Feel free to paint along with me or simply listen in, but keep in mind that if you paint along it will be easier to give and receive feedback!

What will the structure of this course look like?

The goal is that for each week, we will learn a new concept and produce work that corresponds with it. We will have this class once a week. In the first half, I will give a short lecture/demo where you can take notes and paint along. The second half will be pure studio time where you can paint with others, post your progress to Padlet (I will be going over this on the first day), and give/receive feedback from me and your peers! The assignment will be "due" in the next class period where we will be having a final gallery showing of those projects. Feel free to work on the paintings even after the due date. For the last class, we may choose to either do one last fun painting together or have a mini gallery exhibition where we will showcase and celebrate our favorite works.

Supply Cost?

It depends on what materials you get, but this course is very flexible in material considering the introductory level. However, keep in mind that professional-grade will be more expensive.

Is there homework?

It depends on how much you want to work on it outside of class! There is plenty of time to work on your pieces during class, but if you want to work more on it outside of class, feel free to!

What will we learn?

I will elaborate on the first day, but we will cover:

– value
– color
– still life
– different styles (pointillism, palette knife, cubism)
– portrait
– glaze painting
– landscape (plein air)
– abstraction/conceptual
– as well as anything the class is interested in learning!
